A woman burdened by war . . . A doctor torn between passion and duty . . . A
sweeping tale of love in the face of dishonor from the incomparable
storyteller—Kathleen Woodiwiss.
Alaina MacGaren is forced to flee the
devastation of her homeland in the guise of a young boy, only to find
sanctuary in the arms of an enemy. Cole Latimer is a dashing Yankee
surgeon who has served the Union faithfully, and his tender heart
compels him to help a ragged, innocent "lad" in need—never suspecting
the rags conceal a bewitching belle suspected of being a rebel spy.
But
Alaina's masquerade does not fool Cole for long. And the strength,
courage, and breathtaking sensuality of this woman whom it would be
treasonous to love sets duty and desire at war within him. Yet Destiny
has joined them for good or ill--and they both must follow where their
hearts would lead them, if they are to build a glorious new life
together out of the ashes of the old.

A Reader's Opinion
Kathleen E. Woodiwiss is, to this day, my favorite historical romance author. There are others who I truly enjoy, but she tops the list.
Woodiwiss is such an outstanding storyteller that it should come as no
surprise that I found her Civil War era story just as remarkable as all her others.
Divided into two parts, this one is quite a bit longer and worth the
extra time. There is a bit more description than I normally like to
read, however the author does a remarkable job in portraying an aspect
of life during the war and her protagonists are equally delightful and
maddening. Once in a while I'll skip over to the second part since I've
read this book multiple times, but I've lost count on how many times I've enjoyed reading this story. Endearing characters and a storyline that
will pull you in, Woodiwiss is, without a doubt, an incomparable storyteller in historical romance. I never tire of reading her books.
Content: There are sexual scenes and though I feel these are tastefully done, the scenes are graphic. I will say that Woodiwiss is one of the few authors I've read who manages to seamlessly intertwine sensual scenes into a story and make it seem like a natural addition.
