Ingredients for a Happy and Healthy Day

Today is one of those days when I offer unsolicited advice to writers (or anyone for that matter). Once upon a time I shared a recipe for a Shentrition shake. Well, I've long abandoned that particular drink for one that offers more health benefits and a longer-lasting energy boost.

Because I don't drink anything with caffeine, I have to rely on my body and mind's own natural energy to get me through the day. Exercise and eating healthy foods help, but once in a while I need a little something extra. That's where this super yummy and super easy smoothie comes in.

Shentrition is actually going away (read message and insert tears here). I'm actively searching for a similar alternative, but have yet to find one that I like. In the meantime I'm fortunate that my chiropractor has a small stock left.

Thankfully, this smoothie can still pack a healthy punch and provide plenty of nutrients and energy without the powder. I prepare this drink 3-4 times per week because it can get pricey, and I don't always need the extra energy boost.

I normally make enough for two shakes, so that's what this simple recipe offers. Simply cut in half to make one.

- 1 cup organic coconut water
- 1 cup Kefir (I prefer the blueberry, but I can't always find it)
- 3 Tbs aloe vera juice
- 1 1/2 cups organic frozen berries (I get this antioxidant blend from Costco)

Combine with a few ice cubes, blend, and enjoy hours of mental energy for all that writing. If you want to an extra boost of health, add some fresh spinach or kale.

It is strongly recommended that this refreshing drink follows a nice long walk in fresh air, or a sweaty session at the gym, or a even a body-changing hour of yoga. Writing is one of those sedentary jobs that can quickly lead to healthy problems if one isn't careful.

Be kind to your mind and body, and give it a little love every day - whether you're writing or not.
